iBalans – Paddling for mental wellbeing
Finding balance through paddling, nature and community
iBalans is an initiative exploring how paddling and outdoor recreation on and around water can contribute to mental wellbeing. It brings together physical activity, contact with nature, the calming qualities of water and social connection – creating opportunities for recovery, personal development and a greater sense of balance.
One part of the initiative focuses on guided paddling activities in safe and supportive environments for people experiencing, or at risk of, mental health difficulties. In 2026, a pilot programme was launched together with a local canoe club, offering participants a series of sessions where they could discover sea kayaking, spend time outdoors and become part of a small and welcoming group. No previous paddling experience was required.
The aim reaches beyond the individual experience. Through the pilot, we are developing methods that can help canoe clubs and Approved Canoe Centres offer safe and supportive paddling activities to more people – and create opportunities for participants to continue engaging with paddling and outdoor recreation afterwards.
At the same time, iBalans works to increase knowledge and awareness of mental health among leaders and volunteers within the paddling community. By strengthening leadership, understanding and the way we meet people, our clubs can become even more meaningful and supportive places – particularly for children and young people.
Our ambition is to use paddling as a pathway to wellbeing – helping people discover the restorative qualities of nature, movement, water and belonging.
