Trygg på vattnet – Safety on water

Knowledge and preparation create safer experiences

Feeling safe on the water is an important part of enjoying paddling and exploring the outdoors. For the Swedish Canoe Federation, safety is not only about equipment or knowing what to do when something goes wrong. It is also about knowledge, preparation, good judgement and making informed decisions before heading out.

We provide advice and practical guidance for paddlers of all levels – from beginners taking their first trip to experienced paddlers exploring more challenging waters. This includes choosing the right equipment, always wearing a life jacket, understanding weather and water conditions, cold-water awareness, planning the trip and knowing your own abilities.

Education is another important part of our safety work. Through Paddelpasset, the Swedish version of the Euro Paddle Pass, paddlers can gradually develop their skills, knowledge and confidence. We also provide dedicated safety training in rescue techniques, first aid and CPR, as well as safety in moving water. The aim is not only to know how to respond to an emergency, but to develop the skills and judgement that can help prevent one.

Safety is also about how paddling activities are organised. We support canoe clubs, Approved Canoe Centres, organisers and other providers with guidance, tools and resources for systematic safety work. Risk assessment, safety planning, emergency preparedness and incident reporting help organisations identify risks, learn from experience and create safer activities for both participants and leaders.

And being safe means more than physical safety. We want paddling to be an environment where people feel welcome, included and respected. Through our work with Trygg idrott (“Safe Sport”), we support clubs and leaders in creating positive environments where people can participate, develop and enjoy paddling according to their own abilities and circumstances.

Our goal is to give both paddlers and those who lead and organise paddling the knowledge, confidence and tools to create safe and positive experiences on the water.
